Niels Vermeersch is the founder and Grand Duke of the Grand Duchy of Flandrensis, established in 2008. Flandrensis developed into an environmental micronational project and has received attention in media and academic publications on micronationalism.
Niels has been a frequent speaker at micronational meetings and international conferences, including the Polination Conferences in London in 2012 and Perugia in 2015, as well as events in Aigues-Mortes in 2016 and Vincennes in 2018.
In May 2022, he was invited to speak at ChangeNOW in Paris on environmental micronationalism, and in 2022 he was inducted into the Micronational Hall of Excellence and received the Emperor Norton Award.
